Chicago group Mako Sica’s name in Lakota means “bad lands” which transports the listener to the setting of their sparse sound as much as it encapsulates the band’s description of America using the language of a people overtaken by modern society. The group’s founders, guitarist/trumpeter Przemyslaw Drazek and vocalist/guitarist Brent Fuscaldo, have evolved the group by collaborating with various percussionists along the way including the legendary Hamid Drake. Since 2007 they’ve recorded for Astral Spirits, Feeding Tube, Instant Classic, Permanent Records, La Societe Expeditionnaire, among others. Byron Coley describes the group as “playing live shows that submerge your brain in a sonic soup that recalls the Sun City Girls at their most psychedelically Eastern. The band’s approach to music feels almost alchemical. Trumpet, voice, guitar, drums and keys blend together in mysterious ways. The vocals are always more abstract than declarative, the guitar lines are sinewy, the rhythms roll and splash like a mirage oasis made real, and the trumpet arrives (when it does) sounding almost more like a shofar being played in a temple.
Keyboards/ bass/ drums trio, exploring psychedelic funk and cacophonous free improvisational journeys. Featuring Daniel Van Duerm on keys, Andrew Scott Young on bass and Ben Billington on drums.
